BENIN-CITY, 08/11/2023
VIISAUS is proud to announce its partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to create an advanced information management system aimed at combating human trafficking and irregular migration originating from Edo State, Nigeria. Recent reports and data on human trafficking have underscored Edo State’s significance as a major source region for trafficking victims and one of Africa’s most frequently trafficked destinations. In 2017 alone, out of the 119,000 migrants who arrived in Italy, 18,185 were from Nigeria, including 5,425 women, with a staggering 94% originating from Edo State. As of March 2022, the Edo State Taskforce Against Human Trafficking (ETAHT) reported receiving 5,142 returnees who were victims of human trafficking.
The Managing Migration Through Development Programme (MMDP), led by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), aims to coordinate efforts among key stakeholders to combat human trafficking and irregular migration. A pivotal aspect of this initiative is the development of a robust case management system, spearheaded by VIISAUS, designed to collect high-quality data. This system empowers the Edo State Taskforce Against Human Trafficking (ETAHT) with evidence-based tools to effectively reduce human trafficking in the region.
Chioma Obiokolo, Head, Technology Products & Consulting at VIISAUS, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “VIISAUS is proud to partner with the IOM in the fight against human trafficking. Our passion for creating data-backed, intelligence-driven solutions is at the core of everything we do. We are excited to leverage our extensive experience to design and implement a robust information management system that will empower the Edo State Taskforce Against Human Trafficking with the tools they need to make informed decisions, enhance coordination, and ultimately save lives.”
